our golf courses
The Montgomery (6452 yards, Par 71, SSS 72) and The Bruce (6231 yards, Par 73, SSS 72) are laid out to be a serious challenge to the good player, while at the same time providing fun and enjoyment in a beautiful parkland setting for the holiday golfer and those on club or group outings. A number of holes have views over Loch Leven to the hills beyond and all of the fairways are bounded by trees and plantations, a mixture of mature cherries, oaks, beech, ash, pine, larch and spruce.
Unlike many courses where so many holes can appear the same, all our holes present very different challenges, often culminating in raised greens with wicked contours!
Kinross Golf Club has been in existence since 1888 but, until the 2nd World War, golf was played on a 9 hole course on land just to the west of the town and the M90 motorway. That course was ploughed up during the war as part of the drive to produce food for the war effort. After the war ended, a new 9 hole course was laid out on a new site which today essentially forms the first 4 holes and the final 5 holes of The Bruce.
In 1973, the landlord in the form of Kinross Estate Company reached agreement with the Club to take over the operation of the 9 hole course in return for expanding it to 18 holes – the additional holes were duly constructed on the land which nowadays forms the 1st hole and the last 8 holes on The Montgomery.
Demand for tee times from club members, Green Hotel residents and visitors grew steadily until, by the mid 1980s, it became clear that a second golf course was desirable. The topography dictated that the course be split back into its two distinctive 9 hole units with 9 new holes being added onto each to effectively form the two 18 hole courses that exist today. They were opened in their current format in 1991 and have matured beautifully since then.
